Medewi...Great place.

I visited Medewi Bali in the first week of sept 06 and stayed in the Medewi Beach cottages Bali. What a great place. Great food at the cottages and also the warung and Mai Malu up the road. The area around medewi lefts is great, the locals are friendly and the vibe is very good. Dont forget the booties and watch for urchins. The right hander down the beach about 300m is worth the walk and easy to get in and out over sand compared to the rocks at medewi lefts. This place is great...I will return!!! :)

Bali Medewi in the Wet
Mooney
The wet season is generally best for Medewi. Lighter winds. Balian river mouth and a few other rock ledges are good options on the smaller days. Great time to go to Medewi in October mate.

Bali Puri Dajuma

Just got back from good surf here in April. Not as steep as the coral reefs but the wave still has alot of power to drive you. Very similar to Sunset Cliffs or Tresles. Must recommend staying at Puri Dajuma located a nice walk down the beach which provided some good unridden rivermouth barrels along the way! If Medewi is crowded you can always head for the rivermouths and catch a nice righthander.

Medewi is the most chilled out care free joint in Bali. You wake up in the morning and the surf is right on ya door step. You could be out at about 7 and surf for 3-4 hours. the leftie just peels off and doesn't wanna kill ya. its the easiest wave ive ever ridden and there aint one day that i wish i was there... peace

Medewi Menyana
This place is the classic chilled out Bali experience.Everybody is cool and friendly.Check the local guys, they paddle out, surf a few waves and come in.Then go out a bit later. The Warung in front of the break is where you talk and get other peoples stories. It is not the hasslely place that Kuta is.These people are BALOS not Javans and are more laid back they get along with chilled out Aussies well.Boards from fish to mals will work here as will manners and patience,if you get my drift.Balian is 25 mins away and these 2 breaks will make a good holiday in themselves. G-Land is a short drive away if you wish more challenge.Anyway, it's a great change.Keep Surfing.

Great, Monkey!

Stay at the hotel right on the beach there. It is great. The food is great. The surf is fun. There is a fun right hander around the corner. Super mellow. A lot of Euro surfers who can't surf, so the waves will be all yours.

fun wave, good starting point
luke...this is a pretty mellow wave to get some reef-like experience on. The bottom is smooth rocks that are covered in this seaweed-type stuff, which makes it softer than the unforgiving reef at Uluwatu. The board you mention may be a little cumbersome, and if you can't manage it it may be a hazard to others in the water. Medewi is generally less crowded than Kuta and offers a number of better sections. You should have some fun if the swell is in the 2-3ft range, any bigger and you may want to stick to the sand bottom of Kuta. Although you'll be sharing it with about 100 japanese, euro, US kooks. Anyone with a bit of talent will head to Ulu. Hope the info helps, stay stoked!

Medewi Surf Report
I was in Bali August to September. I read that Medewi is a "fun" longboard wave. Well, I found out that if the swell is strong enough that Medewi is also downright powerful. I caught Medewi at a solid 3 meters+ and was very impressed. If the swell is strong enough it is a thorough top to bottom wave with lots of power, then it lines up and breaks along the rock point. Paddle out can be a bit of a hassle if it is big. FYI- if you want to stay at the Medewi Beach resort they quote you a price of $60US

Medewi Accomodations
If anyone can tell me about accomodations in Medewi I would be really interested. Also, culturally whats it like up around there? Is it a cool place to hang or is it absolutely dead?

Medewi
Yeah, Medewi is OK if you haven't had a surf for a while. It's pretty mellow but on a good day it can go for ages. Balian is another spot nearby usually about 2 foot bigger and better but can get packed with japs

Medewi: A Little Bit Like Bali Was
Recent article in the Bali Advertiser by the Editor:
"If it wasn't for the big sign announcing its presence as you come up over a rise driving west along the Jembrana coast, you'd never know it was there. Medewi lies in the middle of Bali's most sparsely populated and least developed district, the far-off regency of Jembrana 75 kilometers from Denpasar on the main road west (2.5 hours) or 34 kilometres west of Tabanan.

Put another way, visitors to Bali pass by Medewi without realizing it while travelling on the road east out of Bali's port of Gilimanuk. All that can be seen are a string of houses and a solitary mosque along the highway.

This tiny and remote tourist enclave, at the end of a 500-meter-long paved road, is actually one of Bali's premier surf spots a private paradise for the Japanese and Australian surfing set (the rocky beach is not suitable for sunbathing or swimming). The place is still a little bit like Bali was when the first wave of travellers hit the island's shores in the mid-1970s.

The best surf is early in the mornings before the wind picks up. The biggest waves are in August when even the village's fishermen don't dare to go out.

The locals make their living by fishing off the black sand beach, peddling giant prawns to tourists, and grazing their cattle in surrounding paddocks. Back from the beach under the coconut palms is a cluster of homestays, and an excellent three-star hotel all very good value.

The beach consists of a stretch of huge smooth grey rocks with some sandy patches. The current is light and the waves probably the easiest on Bali, ideal for beginner and amateur surfers. The surf can also be lots of fun for more advanced surfers to practice tricks, without having to be concerned with clashing against the sharp coral reefs of Bali's south coast.

Medewi is in fact the longest point break in Bali, a lefthander that rolls gently over black boulders and offers rides of up 200-400 meters long. It works best at mid- to high-tide on a two-meter high swell. On bigger swells, a right-hand breaking peak breaks in the middle of the bay straight in front of traditional fishing jukung pulled up on the beach.

A 500-meter walk south of the main point break will lead you to the Pulukan River mouth, a thrilling fast breaking righthander that, although visible from the main Bali-Java Road, seems to miss the crowds. There are also numerous bombora-style peaks just off the beach, and a couple of other point/reef breaks that are regularly surfed by Bali's west coast crew.

As is the case everywhere in Bali, the locals are friendly both in and out of the surf. As a bonus, Medewi's spectacular sunsets and cool and quite tropical evenings add a touch of glamour.
